A few years ago, I was doing a tour in southamerica, and I was using rented drums. I told the road manager to ask for Gretch drums wenever was posible, and I used at least 10 differnet gretch sets. Some of them sounded fantastic, but I had a very dificult time with others. I haven't used Gretch since then. [img]frown.gif[/img]
I respect both Gretsch and Yamaha drums. But am I the only one around who thinks Vinnie sounded better with Yamaha?
I agree that the drum sound on Document is excellent. Especially the snare (then kick, then toms). What was his snare on this? This could be the ultimate sound I'd like to have!
And I didn't mean to say that Gretsch = automatically crap.
It's just that I personnally never acoustically played/heard a Gretsch kit that blew me away. But I'm sure guys here that play Gretsch's love them for a reason.

As I understand it, those Yam's age very well too. My neighbor has a set of those classic red Recording Customs and he just pulled 'em out of storage, Remo'd them up and I was blown away. They're probably over 14 years old easily.

I have a set of Yami's that I think are pre-recording custom, Woodgrain finish that my dad gave me. They sound amazing. I also have a Tony-esque red gretsch kit with a 24"kick and toms that I like to intergrate with the Yami kick. The Gretschs are warmer in my opinion and great to record with. The Yami's are better for live gigs. And yes, Live In Japan with Chick was Vince on his Yami's. Hagi over at Yamaha would have shit if he saw Vinnie on Gretsch's in Japan. LOL
For some reason, I can't stand Pearl drums. Dunno why. Maybe cause I feel the hardware sucks so bad.

I have a set of Gretsch's from '85, prev owned by a great & famous popular session studio drummer [as if that matters ;c) ].
8, 10, 12, & 14" toms, 22" kick.
They sound great. But i am noticing over time that something seems to be changing about the tones - they've been thru a lot/are very road worthy. Maybe it's my ears [tho i don't think so], or the general humidity & heat over the yrs...
But aft a few yrs i've had trouble w the 14" [FT] sound.
Any tips on tuning your 14" FT? I know it's prob been touched on here in the past....

There are women out there who are great players. Aside from the blown out-of-proportion other stuff, in all reality, you being female has little or no bearing on anything else here, so it's all good.

The Gretsch toms sound flat and cardboard-y. His (Yamaha?) toms were fat and sassy in the late 80s early 90s. Maybe his old yellow Grestch kit sounded great but his new ones don't.
